Philadelphia Clergy Members Charged in Alleged Child Sexual Exploitation Case

clergy sexual abuse

Clergy sexual abuse arrests have been announced by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. Criminal charges were filed Tuesday against two local clergy members accused of sexually exploiting minors.

According to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, prosecutors have charged Isaiah Banks, 30, and Bryan Jackson, 42, in connection with an investigation involving the alleged sexual abuse and exploitation of minors. Local reports identified Jackson as the senior pastor of The Garden of Prayer World’s Prayer Center. Banks was the senior pastor of Second Pilgrim Baptist Church in North Philadelphia.  Authorities say the men used positions of trust and authority to exploit vulnerable children and obtain sexually explicit material from minors. Investigators believe multiple victims may have been affected.

The clergy sexual abuse investigation began after a report was made to the authorities. Prosecutors say forensic evidence and witness interviews uncovered evidence that the defendants allegedly worked together to obtain sexually explicit images and videos from minors. Both men have been arrested and are facing numerous felony charges. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could be filed as more information becomes available.

When Religious Leaders Abuse Their Position of Trust

Cases involving clergy sexual abuse are particularly devastating because they often involve individuals who occupy positions of authority, trust, and influence within a faith community. Survivors may struggle for years before coming forward, especially when the abuse involves manipulation, grooming, threats, or fear of not being believed.

Unfortunately, allegations of clergy sexual abuse are not isolated incidents. Across Pennsylvania and the country, investigations have revealed instances where children were abused by trusted religious leaders, youth mentors, and other authority figures. Many survivors carry the effects of that trauma well into adulthood.

Clergy Sexual Abuse Civil Lawsuits May Be Available to Survivors

While criminal charges focus on holding offenders accountable, survivors may also have the right to pursue a civil claim for damages. Civil lawsuits can seek compensation for:

  • Psychological and emotional trauma
  • Counseling and mental health treatment
  • Medical expenses
  • Lost wages and diminished earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Other long-term impacts of abuse

In some cases, legal claims may also be brought against churches, religious organizations, or other institutions that failed to protect children or ignored warning signs of abuse.
