Delaware County, Pennsylvania Teacher & Track Coach Faces Institutional Sexual Assault Charges

A Delaware County teacher was charged with institutional sexual assault and other charges. Gregory A. Stanczuk was a long time physics teacher at Ridley High School. He was also the girls track coach. According to the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, Stanczuk allegedly sexually assaulted an 18 year old female student.

The improper relationship began when the student was a freshman on the track team. The girl was also in Stanczuk’s physics class. Stanczuk was arrested after a lengthy investigation.

Gloucester County, New Jersey Substitute Teacher & Softball Coach Faces Sexual Assault Charges

In New Jersey, a softball coach was also charged last month with sexual assault charges for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 17 year old girl. The 33 year old coach lives in Gloucester County, New Jersey, and he was also a substitute teacher at Gloucester City High School. The sexual relationship allegedly happened from May 2009 to December 2009 while the man was the girl’s coach.

Why Students May be Vulnerable to Sexual Abuse by Teachers

Teachers are in a position of power and are seen as authority figures by their students. Teachers don’t only teach their students; they also report their behavior to the students’ parents. From a young age, children are told to listen to their teachers at school and do what the teachers tell them to do. Therefore, students may be afraid of getting in trouble if they don’t listen to their teachers.

Students who are sexually abused by their teachers have legal rights both criminally and civilly. Perpetrators face criminal charges, and may also be sued in a civil lawsuit by their victims. In addition, school administrators/schools may also be liable for a student’s sex abuse by a teacher if they received reports of the abuse but failed to report it to the authorities.
