Earlier this month, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and a U.S. based power tool importing company issued a joint recall of over half a million Ryobi brand power tool battery chargers.
On November 5, 2013, the CPSC and One World Technologies, based out of South Carolina, recalled approximately 578,000 Ryobi brand power tool battery chargers. The model involved is the P113 dual chemistry battery chargers designed for use with NiCd and Li-Ion portable power tool batteries. The model number of the recalled chargers can be obtained on the bottom of the charger.
These power tool battery chargers were manufactured in China and were sold at various power tool retail stores, including Direct Tools Factory Outlet and Home Depot from 2007 through 2009. They were also sold online. These chargers were sold individually and as part of a kit, ranging in price from $30 to $270.
The recall was issued due to the risk of overheating. The battery chargers may pose a fire hazard. While no injuries have been reported thus far, the tool importer received 25 reports of property damage due to overheating.
Consumers who own this charger should immediately stop all use, unplug it, and call the tool importer for a free replacement. One World Technologies can be contacted toll free at (800) 597-9624.
Ryobi Power Tool Battery Packs also Recalled in February 2013
This is the second Ryobi battery recall in 2013. On February 26, 2013, over 50,000 Ryobi power tool battery packs were recalled for a similar risk. That recall involved Ryobi brand Lithium 18 V 4Ah battery packs, model number P108. These battery packs were also sold at various tool retail stores, including Home Depot.
