Fireworks Accidents & Injuries to Avoid this 4th of July

As cities prepare for one of the nation’s most important holidays, the 4th of July, it’s time to talk about safety and avoiding accidents and injuries this holiday weekend.

Just last week, two people were killed in unrelated firework accidents in the U.S. A teen in Tennessee died after a rocket failed to propel upwards and instead propelled into his chest. A father in Michigan was killed after a rocket firework went off near his head. There are literally thousands of injuries in the month surrounding the 4th of July.

The infographic below shows how common firework injuries and accidents are.

Tips for a Safe Fireworks Display at Home

All fireworks are potentially dangerous, especially when children are involved. For example, sparklers often burn at temperatures higher than 1,000 degrees, oftentimes at 2,000 degrees. Hand injuries are common, and young people under the age of 20 are most at risk. In addition, males tend to suffer injuries at almost double the rate of females. Injuries can be permanent and often include blindness, scarring and amputation.

Here are tips to ensure your holiday doesn’t turn into a trip to the local emergency room.

  • Never let children play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Make sure you have a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Designate a responsible, sober adult to light fireworks.
  • Never attempt to re-light a firework that didn’t light properly the first time.
  • Don’t light fireworks near homes, trees or bushes.
  • After burning out, douse the firework with water before disposal.

What to Do if You’re Injured

If you or a loved one is injured in a firework accident, call 911 immediately. Do not attempt to wash or treat a serious burn. Never jump into a pool or other water source to cool the burn. This can lead to infection.

If an eye injury occurs, seek immediate medical attention. Don’t attempt to remove anything that is lodged into the eye. Cover the eyes with a light cloth and wait for medical treatment.
