5 More Forklift Accident Deaths (August 2014)

Each year, literally 100s of workers across the country are killed in workplace accidents involving forklifts. In fact, forklifts are frequently cited as one of the most dangerous types of workplace equipment. For the last 10+ years, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has listed forklift accidents as one of the most common causes of work related accidents, including fatalities.

This summer is no exception. In fact, there have been multiple forklift accident deaths since June.

North Carolina Man Killed in Forklift Crush Accident (August)

A mill worker was killed when he was run over by a forklift. It’s unclear whether the worker was operating the forklift or was simply working near the forklift when it tipped over. As a result of this recent death, the mill was shut down, and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) is investigating.

Tennessee Forklift Accident Kills Repair Worker (July)

A worker in Camden, Tennessee was killed when the forklift he was working on fell on him. The accident occurred at a plastic engineering plant. Both the local, state and federal OSHA offices are investigating the accident.

Tennessee Father Killed in Forklift Accident at Log Company (June)

Another Tennessee man was killed in a separate forklift accident. This accident involved a father and son team hired as contractors at a log (oak stave) company in Tennessee. The father was killed, and the son was hospitalized with massive injuries. According to an employee, the forklift malfunctioned. OSHA is investigating. It is not yet known whether the forklift did in fact malfunction and if so, why.

Minneapolis Forklift Accident Kills Worker (June)

A forklift operator was killed when the stack of wood on the forklift he operated fell on top of him, crushing him. The accident occurred at a container shipping company in Minnesota. It’s unclear how or why the stack of wood came off the forklift. However, improper loading, i.e., overloading, is the most common cause of these kinds of accidents.

Texas Teen Killed in Forklift Accident (June)

A minor was killed after he attempted to jump on a forklift. According to an online news report, a teenager jumped onto a forklift and fell off. The forklift then ran over his torso, causing fatal injuries. The accident occurred at a junk yard in Horizon City, Texas. No other details have been released at this time.
